Monty Bojangles makes award-winning cocoa-dusted truffles, sold through major UK retailers and direct to customers through its own online store. Gifting is at the heart of the brand, and online, every order is a bundle: truffle boxes aren't sold individually, so customers build their own selection from the full range, choosing between 3 and 9 boxes, and can add an occasion card with a personal message.

The store was running on WooCommerce. With every sale going through the bundle builder, it was the most important part of the move to Shopify to get right: if the builder didn't work, the store couldn't take orders. No off-the-shelf bundle app handled the way their customers shop, so Gravytrain designed and built a bespoke bundle builder, alongside the full platform migration, a new theme and a dedicated route for corporate orders.

Key Challenges

The builder is the whole store

With no individual boxes for sale, the bundle builder is the only route to purchase, so it had to be fast, reliable and easy to use for every customer.

A bundle that isn't fixed until the end

Customers can build a bundle of anywhere from 3 to 9 boxes, and they don't commit to a size up front. They add flavours as they go, so the final size, and everything that depends on it, isn't known until they're ready to check out.

Pricing and packaging that changes with bundle size

Price and packaging depend on how many boxes end up in the bundle, so the builder has to recalculate as the customer adds or removes flavours, rather than working from a preset product.

Keeping the experience simple

Behind the scenes the logic is complex, but for the customer it had to feel as easy as picking chocolates off a shelf, especially on mobile.

Getting orders out correctly

Every bundle is unique, so each order had to reach the warehouse with a clear list of flavours, the right packaging and the card message, in a format the fulfilment team could work with.

Protecting existing visibility

The migration also needed to keep search rankings, customer accounts and order history intact.

Gifting at scale

Corporate customers often send bundles to several people at once, which a standard single-address checkout doesn't allow.

The Solution

A bespoke bundle builder

We built a custom bundle builder on Shopify that works around the customer rather than a fixed product. Shoppers browse the full flavour range and add boxes to their bundle, and the builder tracks their selection in real time. Once they're done, it works out the final bundle size and price at that point, before adding everything to the cart as a single bundle.

No off-the-shelf bundle app could handle this logic, so we developed the builder as a private Shopify app, built specifically for Monty Bojangles and fully under their control.

Personalised gifting

Customers can add an occasion card (Birthday, Thank You, Congratulations, Christmas and more) with a personal message of up to 150 characters. We built a connector that turns each card message into a printable sticky label, so the team can print it and stick it straight onto the card. No handwriting or retyping, and every message goes out exactly as the customer wrote it.

Clear orders for fulfillment

Each bundle comes through as a single bundle product with its own bundle ID, and the chosen flavours are listed as line items beneath it. The team can see exactly what goes in each box, pick and pack it, and add the right card without extra admin.

Migration and theme build

We migrated the store from WooCommerce, mapped over 400 URLs with 301 redirects to protect search visibility, and built a new Shopify theme that reflects the brand's playful personality.

Corporate orders

We set up multi-address shipping for corporate customers, so a business can order multiple bundles in one transaction and send each one to a different address. That makes it simple to send gifts to clients or staff in one go, without placing separate orders.

The Results

Customers building bigger bundles

Every online order now runs through the bundle builder. Year to date, the average order value is £34.55, 38% above the £25 minimum bundle, so customers regularly go beyond three boxes.

Endless ways to personalise

With 15 flavours and bundles of up to 9 boxes, customers can create over [1.3 million / 27,000] different combinations, each one tracked clearly through to fulfilment.

Operational efficiency

Bundle orders arrive ready to fulfil, with each bundle's flavours listed as line items and card messages printed as ready-to-stick labels. Corporate customers can send multiple bundles to different addresses in a single order.
